A colonial residence in Cary, N.C. underwent a comprehensive interior redesign last year to bring out the homeowners’ fun and playful style. The result brightened the space and improved functionality thanks to bold design patterns and funky, high-contrasting objects. Changes that helped transform this into a more modern home to befit their personalities. This residential interior remodeling project included creating a music room and updates to a dining room, living room, game room, two children’s rooms, and an adult loft.
A lovely family of four relocated from out of state and decided to bring very little furniture from their previous home. Mom moved first and worked with us to share her family’s key directives to brighten the space with fun, bold patterns and colors, and to improve the flow throughout.
Transforming this 2,400 sq. ft. residential interior was completed without structural changes. Improvements to functionality were completed with new design layouts. Concepts for each room reflected the family’s detailed wish list with a clear understanding of their personalities and style tendencies. The home was modernized without looking out of character for the region.
Bringing fun to light
The family’s fun and playful personalities opened opportunities for bold and high contrasting design. The family loved the idea of contrast between rooms to create unique spaces. Designs allowed the spaces to both stand apart and work together, while the use of common elements such as curtains, patterns, and accessories tied rooms together.
New designs also incorporated photography, antiques and other collectibles from the family’s travels. Long, narrow living room walls benefitted from varying shades of gray to help organize the space and add warmth. The original brick fireplace was complemented with a custom modern surround.
An adjoining room was transformed into a music room to allow the family’s melodic talents to thrive. Navy grasscloth wallpaper, a chevron console and green chair provide pizzazz and creative inspiration. Striped draperies connect the room with its adjoining dining room, which features funky wallpaper contrasted with black moldings and a porcelain deer wall-hanging that sports red antlers.
Bold furnishings made an impact and served a functional purpose throughout. Upstairs, the game room highlights a custom-made Lego station in addition to Pac-Man shelving. Primary blue walls are finished off with an alien rug to give the room unique character.
One child’s room focuses on high ceilings using wallpaper and creative photographs depicting the family’s passion for Star Wars. The other child requested a more feminine design, which provides balance to the room’s unusual walls and door leading to the attic.
Finally, pop culture mixes with avant-garde pub in the funky adult loft that showcases dad’s unique collections of autographed celebrity photos that adorn walls alongside wallpaper demonstrating their love of animals. See more of this residential interior in our gallery.
